Home remedies

Home has a new meaning these days, from a newly fashioned classroom to makeshift office on the kitchen table. It’s the center of everything lately, which can be wonderful yet also confining. Although I haven’t family here besides the occasionally naughty puppy running around, it still can feel like I need an escape sometimes. I’ve been trying new recipes and techniques in bread, sourdough and brioche to start which have turned out surprisingly delicious. The sourdough needs a bit more tweaking :) The King Arthur Flour recipe for Brioche is easy and immensely rewarding, especially now when we could all use something a little rich and comforting. I also made a second version with black currants and orange zest — absolutely delicious for an Easter brunch.

The garden has been keeping me busy, I think it always will…it seems never ending! Spending some time outside in the fresh air and sunshine is just about the best remedy I can think of right now for anyone…to keep their spirit up and get some exercise. There is nothing quite like getting down in the dirt and planting something…the act itself is one of hope of a new day. I’ve been weeding out these beautiful roses that were strangled by blackberries and beginning to get some beds ready for a few vegetables. Now is the time to plant and get some yard work done if there ever was one!

Another activity I loved as a little girl at this of the year was pressing flowers. My mother, sister, and I would gather some wildflowers around the farm or in the garden and begin a little collection of dried flowers. She would teach us which was which and how to grow them. We would collect a few old books, dust them off, and put our little garden treasures in there. It would keep us occupied for a few hours and get us outside. Just an idea for any little ones you have with too much energy inside! Nature is the supreme mother and teacher for any young ones. If I had children at home, I would incorporate nature and all of its gifts at this time in their lessons.

Hope you have a lovely weekend at home,

x
